Meet Sharona

Meet Sharona Washington-Lockett, a passionate patient advocate, public speaker, and author dedicated to raising awareness and driving change in the eye health space.

Hi there, I'm Sharona Washington-Lockett.

From the very beginning of my life, I was faced with a major decision that would impact my entire future. As an infant, I had to undergo a major surgery for a congenital cataract, a procedure that other physicians said was unlikely to provide good outcome. However, my parents took a chance on Dr. Malcom Mazow from the Houston Eye Associates, and the surgery was successful. But that was just the beginning of my journey.

Over the course of my life, I've had to endure multiple surgeries from several highly experienced ophthalmologists due to various eye health conditions.  Some of the surgeries that I've undergone are Cornea Transplants, Intraocular Lens, and Strabismus. A few of the of the eye conditions I've been diagnosed with are Floaters, Glaucoma, Double Vision, and Amblyopia.

But despite these challenges, I've always remained determined to succeed in whatever I wanted to do.

My personal mantra is "I am not a label, I am whoever I want to be."

With over a decade of experience working in healthcare and graduate medical education, I have a deep understanding of the challenges and complexities of the healthcare system. I've also gone before legislators to advocate for progress in the eye health space and am currently a board member of Prevent Blindness Texas. Additionally, I hold an MBA and an ASPECT Patient Advocacy certificate from Prevent Blindness.

As someone who has personally experienced the struggles and obstacles that come with visual impairments, I am committed to being a voice for those who are visually impaired.

My hope is to bring awareness and change to the health community through public speaking, advocacy, and writing. I've even authored a children's book series!

If you're someone who has faced similar challenges or are interested in learning more about eye health, I'm here to support and empower you. Let’s work together to make a difference and raise awareness in the vision space.
